Holiday Travel Tips
Christmas is almost upon us and many of us will be heading out on the highways for holiday gatherings. It is important to be properly prepared for common problems often encountered while driving. Follow these simple tips to make sure you are prepared for anything:
-Check your tires: Make sure they are properly inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Also, check your tread. Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head down into the tire tread. If you can see past the top of Lincoln’s hairline you need tires (Our service department can also check the tread for you with a gauge).
-Check your fluids: Make sure your engine oil, coolant, and other fluids are at the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
-Safety Equipment: There are many inexpensive kits on the market that contain equipment often needed for roadside emergencies. They often contain items such as flairs, jumper cables, fix-a-flat, and many more. You can purchase one of these kits or build your own.
-Extra Necessities: Many people do not think about being stranded for an extended period of time in their vehicles. While the weather is forecasted to be mild this holiday season it is still a good idea to be prepared. Keep a couple of bottles of water in the car. Also, keep a small amount of packaged food such as granola bars or nuts. A large candle and matches can provide warmth. Extra blankets in the trunk can also come in handy. Just because you have a cell phone doesn’t mean you will always have a signal.
Remember, the most important thing is delivering yourself and your family to your destination safely. Give yourself plenty of travel time so you are not rushed. Obey the speed limits and, if necessary, pass with caution. Leave plenty of distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you in case of sudden stops. Follow these tips and always be aware of your surroundings and you should have no problems this holiday travel season.
